Walhalla Skipper Retires
Riding back on the team bus following his team’s 9-8 victory over Palmetto on Wednesday night, Ed Taylor couldn’t fathom that it has been 23 years since he came on the job at Walhalla High School.
The head coach of the Razors baseball team took the position in 1986, and has helped Walhalla to four region championships and an Upper State title in 1992, all while winning over 300 games in his illustrious career.
However, tonight’s 7 p.m. game against Abbeville will serve as Taylor’s final regular-season home game as the Razorbacks head coach, as he feels the time is right to let somebody else call the shots for Walhalla.
“It’s just time. There are some times when a person feels like it’s the right time to do it, and I feel like this is the right time,” he said. “I just feel like it’s time, and I talked with my family and everything, so that was it.”
The announcement of his retirement comes after the three-time Skyline AA Coach of the Year began contemplating the idea at the beginning of the year, although he still plans to continue his teaching duties in the physical education department at Walhalla in the near future.
Taylor said there was nothing in particular that prompted the move, and he’s just excited for an opportunity to move on to some new things.
He’s especially looking forward to spending more time with his family, having less strenuous time commitments than during his time with the baseball team, and maybe doing a good bit of traveling, as he is still in excellent health.
“Some people retire after their health is bad, and I don’t want to do that,” he said. “I want to be able to still do some things with my family, so that’s what my plans are.”
Walhalla will honor Taylor during tonight’s game against the Panthers, a game that could also give the Razorbacks a share of first place in the Skyline AA standings.
The Razors are already locked into the playoffs with at least a third-place finish in the region standings, and with a bevy of scenarios possible, they could finished tied for either first or second place once the dust settles on the season.
Following the game against Abbeville, Walhalla will then travel to Rabun Co. (Ga.) on Monday to close the regular season.
Along with their upcoming appearance in the playoffs, those games are going to mean a lot to Taylor, who plans on enjoying them to the fullest.
“Every game is special now,” he said. “When you’re ending it, everything is special. It’s kind of sad, but it’s also exciting for what’s ahead too.”
Taylor, who has also coached 26 players who have gone to play on at the collegiate level, will resume his duties this summer as the coach of the American Legion Post 124 baseball team, although he has yet to make a decision about how long he will continue that position.
With an eye on the future, while also trying to relish every moment he has left at Walhalla, Taylor admits that it feels like it was just yesterday he came to Walhalla to coach.
It sounds almost cliché to phrase it like that, but nothing could be closer to the truth for the longtime Walhalla skipper.
“It just happened so fast, but that’s the way life is though,” he said.

Rivalry
secondary
in Razors'
win
WESTMINSTER
— When
West-Oak
and
Walhalla
took to
the
diamond
Tuesday
night, the
focus
wasn’t so
much on
the
rivalry
between
the two
schools,
but rather
each
school
trying to
take care
of its own
business.
The
Razorbacks
went on to
do just
that in
their 9-4
victory
over the
Warriors,
who are
still
looking
for their
first win
on the
young
season.
Walhalla
(4-5, 2-0
Skyline
AA) did
most of
its damage
in the
second
inning,
scoring
seven runs
in the top
of the
frame
before
adding a

scoring.
Razors’
head coach
Ed Taylor
said the
rivalry
meant
something
on Tuesday
because of
the
players’
familiarity
with one
another,
but that
paled in
comparison
to staying
ahead in
region
play.
“It’s
always
good to
beat them,
and they
would tell
you the
same
thing,” he
said. “But
right now
the big
thing is
we’re 2-0
in the
conference.
That’s
more
important
than
anything.
